How to grow Onions

You can buy a variety of onions, red, white, sweet, depending on your taste. The amount of onions for a family of four is as many as you use in the kitchen. They can run out quite quickly if you like onions in your cooking.

Growing tips

You can either start onions from seeds or bulbs from sets. Seeds are planted in spring in trays to be planted out in autumn. Onion sets can be brought from autumn. They can be planted in early autumn for an early crop in spring. Some sets can be planted in spring for a summer crop.

The ground needs to be well tilled, which means an even surface. Bulbs are usually planted with just the tip of the bulb showing. They are planted 6 inches apart and 6 inches between rows.

Keep an eye on them as birds can pull them out although they are usually not eaten. Then can be replanted if they are not damaged.

Onions are ready when the fronds die off. They need to be dried. Remove the dirt by brushing them try not to wash them. You can keep them in a dry place, hung up and in stockings for ventilation.
