How to grow Garlic

For garlic, the amount of plants you need for a family of four is dependant on how much garlic you use. Each clove will give a bulb of garlic. Garlic can be kept for months if left to properly dry out. Keep it dry and away from moisture at room temperature or slightly cooler. Some people like to hang them up to promote air flow.

Plant garlic cloves just below the soil surface in a straight line 4 inches apart and 2 inches down in your vegetable garden. The best time to plant is around October because the frosts will make the cloves split.

Growing tips

They don�t need much fertilizer as they are not very hungry plants.

Garlic patches can get overgrown by weeds, keep on top of the weeding and there will be no problems.

When they are young plants birds will pull at the shoots and pick the plants out of the ground. Monitor how the plants are growing and if they get pulled out you can put them back in the soil. They pull them out to try get food but generally don�t eat the plants.

They may need watering during especially dry patches. However when the cloves have formed you shouldn't water as that can promote rotting. They also need a well draining soil so they don�t get water logged and rot. When watering water gently and try not to puddle the water around the plants.

They can be picked when the green growth has died back and just the garlic bulb is left and the stalk has died back. They can be eaten wet but will last longer if you let them dry. You generally don�t have to wash the garlic and can brush the soil off. Its best not to wash them because promote rot, and the cloves are already protected.
