Butterflies on a leaf

Butterflies are insects.

Starting life as an egg the butterfly hatches into a caterpillar. The caterpillar grows and grows by eating plant matter such as leaves. After the caterpillar grows big enough it finds a suitable spot to turn into a chrysalis. While in the chrysalis the caterpillar undergoes a miraculous transformation into a butterfly. Once ready, the butterfly then bursts out of the chrysalis and after a few hours is ready to fly on as life as a butterfly.

Butterflies feed on nectar of flowers. Nectar is a sugary liquid that plants produce in thier flowers.

Butterflies have brightly coloured wings and each species has different colours, these colours are used to scare off predators.

Butterflies smell with thier feet.

As butterflies lay eggs which turn into caterpillars the best thing to do is to add netting around certain plants to prevent the butterflies from laying eggs in the first place. These plants include Cabbages, Broccoli amongst others.
